A Phillie Teacher

I was a starry-eyed teacher from New Jersey. Now I work for Philadelphia Public Schools.

There are advantages to being a nomad teacher* When I set up camp in the faculty dining room to grade papers and do other teacher stuff, I rub elbows with the people who help our school run: substitutes, cafeteria workers on break, visiting IT guys and our Security Force.

It’s the last group that’s the most interesting. I get all the juice on the fights, thefts, class cuts and general craziness that goes on at New-to-Me High School.

Now that it’s spring, it looks like two of our security guards are hitting it off. I don’t know their names but they’re both very tall, wear the same uniform and talk tough when they have to. It’s fun to watch the gruffness turn to teasing and I can tell they’re both nicely smitten :)

*no classroom of my own and always moving to a different room

I Want to Marry Bill Maher

Posted by aphillieteacher on March 13, 2010

… or at least invite him to dinner :)

His latest post titled New Rule: Let’s Not Fire the Teachers When Students Don’t Learn — Let’s Fire the Parents is funny and right on target:

Yes, America has found its new boogeyman to blame for our crumbling educational system. It’s just too easy to blame the teachers, what with their cushy teachers’ lounges, their fat-cat salaries, and their absolute authority in deciding who gets a hall pass. We all remember high school – canning the entire faculty is a nationwide revenge fantasy. Take that, Mrs. Crabtree! And guess what? We’re chewing gum and no, we didn’t bring enough for everybody.

Please rush over to read it. You’ll be glad you did.

Federal Eyes on South Philly High?

Posted by aphillieteacher on March 11, 2010

It’s said that the Obama administration is rolling out a stepped-up enforcement of civil rights laws at schools throughout the U.S. And of the 38 cases the U.S. Education Department is supposed to open, one involves a “’major urban school district’ and its treatment of students who speak English as a second language.” (The story is Here)

Hopefully, it’ll be the School District of Philadelphia. If you missed the news story, Asian students at South Philadelphia High School were being beaten and harassed by African American students while the administration did *nothing.* Official announcements are coming Wednesday so stay tuned.
